Gladys Zender, from Peru, was the 1st Latina who captured the MU crown. In 1957.

"Fui la primera mujer de pelo castaño y ojos pardos que ganó ese certamen", remembered Gladys in 2014, during the comemorations of her 75th birthday. "Viajé muchísimo y conocí a grandes de Hollywood, como Natalie Wood, Rock Hudson o John Wayne."

A little scandal: after her win, the MUO discovered that Gladys was only 17 years old - the rules required 18. "Yo no tenía ni idea y al día siguiente de la coronación (...) me tuvieron todo el día incomunicada en una habitación mientras deliberaban. Fue un auténtico lío buscar una solución. Al final decidieron que como solo me faltaban tres meses para cumplir los 18 años no me iban a descalificar."
