Curiosities
- The origins of the Miss America Pageant lie in a 1920 event entitled The Fall Frolic. Held on September 25 in Atlantic City, New Jersey, the event was designed to bring business to the Boardwalk: "three hundred and fifty gaily decorated rolling wicker chairs were pushed along the parade route. Three hundred and fifty men pushed the chairs. However, the main attractions were the young 'maidens' who sat in the rolling chairs, headed by a Miss Ernestine Cremona, who was dressed in a flowing white robe and represented 'Peace.' "
- Margaret Gorman was the first Miss America Pageant winner in 1921.
- There were no African American contestants until 1970 when Cheryl Brown, Miss Iowa, competed.
- Vanessa Lynn Williams was the first African American winner in 1984. She was forced to resign seven weeks prior to the end of her reign after the publication of nude photos.
- In 1985 Sharlene Wells Hawkes became the first foreign-born, bilingual Miss America as she was born in Asunción, Paraguay.
- Heather Whitestone won the 1995 pageant becoming the first Deaf Miss America (she lost most of her hearing at the age of 18 months).
- In 1999, Miss America officials announced they had lifted the ban on contestants who were divorced or had had an abortion. This rule change, however, was rescinded and Miss America CEO Robert L. Beck, who had suggested it, was fired.
- The winner for the Miss America 2005 pageant, Deidre Downs, held the position four months longer than usual as the Miss America 2006 pageant was moved from September to January 21, 2006.
- Held on September 15, 2013, the Miss America 2014 pageant returned to its traditional location (Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey) and month (September rather than January) for the first time in nine years.

Re: Road to Miss America 2015 - NY WON
The term "America" in this pageant is wrong, because they are referring only to the USA, when America is a whole continent made out of many countries. I do not support this pageant because of what I just said.

Is true: America is not only USA. We are all "americans" in the Amer. Continent.

NIKY ----> VERY INTERESTING COMMENT!
I HAVE TO AGREEE AND I ALWAYS THINK THAT PEOPLE THAT REFER TO THE UNITED STATES AS AMERICA ARE IGNORANT AND OR NARCISSISTIC.
WE ARE THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA THAT IS OUR OFFICIAL TITLE/NAME NOT AMERICA.
HONESTLY (I THINK THAT) CLAIMING THE ENTIRE TWO CONTINENTS WHICH ARE NORTH AND SOUTH AMERICA AS THE TITLE/NAME OF THE UNITED STATES SHOWS THAT THOSE PEOPLE DON'T KNOW ABOUT GEOGRAPHY, CULTURE AND PROBABLY DON'T KNOW THEIR HISTORY WELL. I DON'T MEAN TO OFFEND BUY ANYONE FROM THE UNITED STATES WHO IS VERY PROUD OF THEIR NATIONALITY, UNLESS THEY ARE DESCENDENT OF CENTRAL/SOUTH AMERICA OR/AND THE CARIBBEAN, SHOULD NOT SAY THAT THEY ARE AMERICAN AS A MEANS OF CLAIMING THAT THE U.S. IS AMERICA BECAUSE WE ARE NOT AMERICA WE ARE PART OF AMERICA. THE BEST PART IS THAT THERE ARE ALSO KNOWLEDGEABLE PEOPLE THAT KNOW WHO THEY ARE, WHERE THEY ARE FROM AND HOW TO TITLE/CALL/NAME THIER NATION, CULTURE AND KNOW HOW TO EXPRESS THEIR PATRIOTISM.
LM*O!
SPEAKING MORE OF THE MISS AMERICA PAGEANT I'VE ALWAYS WONDERED WHY THERE AREN'T ANY CENTRAL AMERICAN (SUBCONTINENT OF NORTH AMERICA), SOUTH AMERICANS AND CARIBBEAN (MAINLY ISLANDS AND PENINSULAS OF THE ATLANTIC OCEAN WHICH BELONG TO NORTH AMERICA).

Re: Road to Miss America 2015 - NY WON
I agree completely with what Niky said, although I currently reside in the USA and many people here call themselves "Americans" but we are all Americans if we thick about it whether we are from North, Central or South America. But I have never liked this pageant. I find it strange that they are holding the 2015 pageant when it is still 2014, and remember that scandal with Miss Delaware? They have some strange rules as well and I do not like this pageant. If they want to call it Miss America, they should allow all the countries in North America, Central America & South America to send representatives and all the countries in the Caribbean as well. But if they want it for only girls from the United States, they shouldn't allow Puerto Rico & The Virgin Islands to compete

POLITICALLY/TERRITORIAL: PUERTO RICO AND THE U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS ARE TERRITORY OF THE UNITED STATES, UPTO THIS POINT THE MISS AMERICA PAGEANT IS DOING WELL. TO EXTEND THIS INFO, GUAM IS ALSO OF THE U.S.A.
