With the skyscrapers ruling the earth, the day is not far when human beings will have towering necks and walk like giraffes around the world. On a serious note, we all know about the world’s tallest building Burj Khalifa, standing with its head held high at 828 metres, in Dubai. It also holds a Guinness world record in its name for being the tallest building in the world. Now here’s another skyscraper in progress – called Kingdom Tower – competing for the tallest building on earth.

Kingdom Tower is aiming to rise as high as 1,000 metres (3280 feet), and will make Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, a proud owner of the tallest building in the world. The Kingdom Tower is expected to be completed by the end of 2018. It will be the first ever structure in the history to stand erect at an astounding height of 1 km!

1 Overview
The Kingdom Tower is the brainchild of Saudi Arabia’s prince Al-Waleed bin Talal, who is the wealthiest Arab in the Middle East. Talal is the royal chairman of the Kingdom Holding Company (KHC), which is a partner in Jeddah Economic Company (JEC). JEC came into being in 2009, specially for the development of Kingdom Tower and City. The Kingdom City is a $20 billion project designed to house the Kingdom Tower and a few more buildings (of about 20-60 storeys) around it. It is being developed to the north of the Red Sea port city.

The Kingdom Tower is currently under construction in the holy city of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. It was earlier planned to have the Tower rise up to a height of one mile, but due to some challenges posed by the geological factors, the structure is now being created to be just 1 km high. Calculations say that this tallest building will consume around $1.2 billion and will be a combination of hotel, luxury residential and retail project.
